Detecting Glaucoma

The path to recovery starts with detection. Early detection of health conditions can lead to a better prognosis and better overall health.

Glaucoma (optic nerve damage) is one of the leading causes of blindness for seniors 60 years and older. Early detection of glaucoma can slow down its progress and even prevent loss of vision. Glaucoma is not uncommon, so staying on top of eye health is imperative as we age. Here are a few tips:

  • Schedule regular dilated eye examinations. Consistent eye assessments detect problems before significant damage happens. Consult your doctor for the right screening schedule.
  • Check your family history. Glaucoma among family members can mean you have an increased risk. Ask your family members and keep a record of family health.
  • Exercise safely. There are moderate eye exercises that reduce eye pressure, thus preventing glaucoma. Check with your doctor on an appropriate exercise program.
  • Consider eyedrops. There are glaucoma eye drops that can be prescribed by your doctor. Eye drops can significantly reduce high eye pressure. Regular use of eyedrops even without the symptoms is deemed highly effective.
  • Use protective eyewear. Wearing sunglasses with UV protection can reduce risk and slow the progression of glaucoma and macular degeneration.
